To honor those Spartans who have demonstrated the traits of leadership, academic excellence, contributions to the arts and sciences and or philanthropy is the purpose of the Distinguished Spartan Award.

The 2018-19 school year marks the first year for the Distinguished Spartan Award. The purpose of the award is to honor those Spartans who have demonstrated the traits of leadership, academic excellence, contributions to the arts and sciences and or philanthropy.

Individuals who may be awarded this honor include alumni, former staff members of Sparta Township Schools, former board members of Sparta Township Schools., as well as former community members in Sparta.

For alumni to be eligible for this award, he/she must be a post graduate of 10 or more years. For former staff members and former board members to be eligible, he/she must be post retirement. For community members, this is at the discretion of the selection committee.

Selections are based off achievements in any of the following categories:

  • Education

  • The Arts or Sciences

  • Professional/Personal Service

  • Community/Charitable

  • Other Personal Noteworthy Achievements

The selection procedure begins with unlimited nominations from any source to be forwarded to the principal at Sparta High School. To nominate an individual for consideration, please complete and return the nomination form which is available via the link 'Sparta High School Distinguished Spartan Award Nomination Form'. This form may be printed and mailed or scanned and emailed to the high school principal at 70 West Mountain Road, Sparta, NJ, 07871. Nominations are accepted each year until December 1st annually for recognition in June of the current school year. From these nominations, the Board will vote for a maximum of two inductees each year. The Board will consist of the school administration plus at least two current teaching staff members.

The inductees will have a plaque placed on the wall outside of the media center and be invited as a guest to graduation. A personal plaque will also be presented to each inductee.
